Can we talk about Kiyoi when Hira doesn’t go after him…
[^Literally checking over his shoulder for Hira.]
vs Kiyoi when Hira DOES go after him?

lollipopsub: utsukushii kare, drunk hira edition
I got another request to sub more of the extra clips of Utsukushii Kare, so of course I did hehe :D
It’s a little improv by Yusei and Riku:
If you have more requests, just send me an ask or a DM and I’ll see what I can do! All I ask is that you please provide a RAW file (a link of sorts) of whatever you want me to subtitle! ^^
Anyways, I hope this amuses y'all as much as it amused me!
Throughout Utsukushii Kare we see that Kiyoi feels like he’s not good enough.
He’s not good enough for his parents, he’s not good enough for the competition so he loses, he’s not good enough for his friend group to not use him and latch on to his popularity to get some girls of their own, he truly believes he’s nothing special and he doesn’t mean anything special to someone, and he even says it, he was just waiting for the people in his class to realize it too, and when they do, they pull away from him, just as Kiyoi was expecting- but Hira is different. Kiyoi didn’t expect it. Kiyoi is good enough in Hira’s eyes. Hira calls Kiyoi a special existence many times just by existing. Kiyoi is enough just by existing. Kiyoi has always been enough, he’s beyond enough. He’s so beyond enough in Hira’s eyes that Hira thinks he can’t have Kiyoi. And that makes Kiyoi cry multiple times - the one person who thinks Kiyoi is good enough, who accepts him as is, keeps pulling away from Kiyoi. That’s why Hira’s lines at the end of the movie are so groundbreaking. It shows Hira’s growth in confidence and self-esteem and it makes Kiyoi (and it made Yusei also) cry - because you’re enough as you are in Kiyoi’s eyes too, Hira. You don’t need to feel so insecure about yourself - you’re not “an invisible person”. There will always be people out there who love you as you are. Because you’re enough as you are. And you, reader, are special just by existing and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Because you exist, you are special. You are enough.
NOoooo because this one scene summarizes what Hira and Kiyoi have done for each other. Mai Sakai is a master at storytelling with visuals. She says so much with every single scene. When this scene is viewed in the third person POV, Hira, who didn’t have the motivation to live, had low grades and didn’t want to go to school, begins studying and doing well and going to school thanks to Kiyoi. He’s sitting there getting his homework done. And Kiyoi is sitting there playing with a Rubiks cube because he can FINALLY be a kid thanks to Hira. Hira healed his inner child. Kiyoi never got to be a kid. He had been training hard since childhood to make it big in the entertainment industry, where fans give celebrities attention and love. He didn’t have time to actually do kid things. His inner child was neglected by 3 parents. Kiyoi tried to fill that void of no love and attention, but it wasn’t working, the void was still there. Now Kiyoi realizes Hira fills the void and some with sincere, pure love and no ulterior motive and asking nothing in return - Hira gives him beyond what he craves and needs. Hira is a safe place - Kiyoi doesn’t want love from fans anymore, he now only wants love from Hira, as his romantic partner. Kiyoi just needs Hira and he’ll be good to go, he doesn’t need others. So Kiyoi changes from being an idol (who have to be “available” and dedicated completely to their fans) to being an actor. He stops going to dance classes and is spending time at Hira’s house instead. The way they heal and love each other is summarized in this one moment.
